Tea

Tea
fragrant leaves, tender buds.
The desire of poetic guests, the love of the Saṅgha.
Cut and ground white jade, red silk woven on a loom.
Boiled in a pan—the color of yellow pistils, swirled around in a bowl—blossoms of yeast mold.
At the end of the night it invites you to accompany the bright
moon, before dawn it makes you face the morning mist.
Washing it down, people of the past and present never tire.Who
can make such a claim after getting drunk?
-- Yuan Zhen (779–831), Quan Tang shi.

Culture as medicine

Just as in every country the food and kitchen should be learnt about, because they have a specific value for that climate and way of life in that country, in the same way, the customs and traditions in every country may serve as means for the inhabitants to deal with the environment, the climate and other local issues. In a way both food and other traditions and customs can be like medicines appropriate for a particular region. Unfortunately, when climate, environment and other local issues change, the creativity in which people adjust their customs and traditions, or invent new customs and traditions, as a response to such changes, seems often to be sadly limited.

Mindfulness is what remains

Mindfulness is not that which you add to your mind, but rather that which remains when you've learnt not to follow through on all the mental chatter.
