Only the Three Refuges can really provide a path to alleviate and end suffering. Other refuges may give us some temporary relief, but not real truth and liberation. It's like seeking shelter for the rain under a tree-- you may be dry for a while, but after the rain, a dripping tree is the worst place to be at.
