An army marches on its stomach

Napoleon is credited for having said that an army marches on its stomach. Though this quote is usually interpreted to mean that soldiers need to be fed to be effective, it's also quite possible that it may mean soldiers need to be drunk to be able to kill. In human history, nearly all battles were fought with soldiers that were drunk or drugged, or, in modern days, severely conditioned and brainwashed. Human beings are of a nature (sīla) to refrain from killing -- if you want a person to kill, they need to be intoxicated and forced to do so.
